First In






I welcome you to my blog site; I hope to show you the fire service in NLC in some interesting events. During the next few years, I will improve on the content and photos to keep you coming back for more. I take pride in my photography and try my best to be first in when possible. The majority of the photos will be from the Norwich companies & surrounding area departments, but sometimes I Buff out of state cities for a change of pace.



As of late I have missed or worked a lot of the incidents. I have a great support group of Photographers to help the site keep up with all the incidents. There are too many to list, So thanks for your support. Thanks for visiting and enjoy .RD Ladd

Mystic, Ct (Stonington) 4th Alarm W/Special calls. 11-27-22

 Mystic Ct, November 27, 2022.   A recent 4 alarm fire at a marina complex fire the buildings, covered an area about 300'x200', with one dwelling on the corner of the lot, One section was well involved at the time of dispatch, With winds between 10-30mph and heavy rain. The fire threaten the residential area 150ft away. First due companies were confronted with fire storm conditions and set up exposure protection on several streets, the fire quickly consumed the buildings in less then 40 mins. Arriving companies had one main direction to get close to the building and that was filled with blowing embers bouncing off every exposure for a block. The first pump to the rear of the building was Marine unit , once crews made access to the boat which was docked 200ft from the original fire building they began operating, then the marine unit relocated to a 2nd location on the D side of the complex, the marine unit supplied, 2 deck monitors and a 5" supply line to a ladder pipe for several hours. Crews remained on the scene all night. This was the largest fire in town in 20 years and this area has had several major fires over the last 150 years.

New London, 3rd Alarm + 11-21-22

Around 09:10, New London, fire responded to Mott St for a dwelling fire, They arrived to find 2 Dwellings well involved with a 3rd lighting off. Command requested a, 2nd and shortly later a 3rd alarm. With fire conditions, and wind coming off the sound, crews worked to contain the fire to the original 3 dwellings, a portable monitor was placed into service on the main building and exposure D, along with several hand-lines from all sides, as the tower ladder was placed into operation. Command directed companies to work the different exposures to bring the fire under control. The primary fire building, collapsed about and hr and half into the fire. Crews overhauled the exposures, due to being on the mouth of the Thames river, crews dealt with Hurricane windows as the vented the dwellings, this hindered some operation in the first mins as they were discovered. After about 2 hrs the fire was under control. Minor damage to a few other exposure buildings was noticed. In all about 6 engine and 5 ladders with support vehicles responded.

Monville Ct, Multi alarm Scrap Yard Fire 11-16-2022

 33 Pequot road, Connecticut Scrap Yard. Metal scrap pile, Yard Fire. Around 6am, Montville and all town departments was dispatched to Connecticut scrap yard for the reported fire, on arrival of M-1 the top of the metal scrap pile was heavily involved extending rapidly, A request for a tanker taskforce was requested along with and extra ladder and engines. 

As long distance water supply was established, the fire spreed to a 100x100 ft area, and now was deep seated in the pile. Command requested extra alarms for tanker which brought in a total of 14. Water supply was delivered by a 1500'+ lay from a hydrant, 2 draft lines from the river about 500' away, and two fill sites approximate 1.5 miles away. One was from a dry hydrant and the 2nd was a city water supply system.

Crews worked the incident from about 14hrs. over the course of the fire, the tankers averaged around 60,000 -90,000 gallons each.

Lebanon Ct, Car fire 11-12-22

Nov 11, 2022. Lebanon Ct, Scott Hill Rd and Rt-2 commuter lot. Fully involved car fire, parked in the lot. Dispatched around 22:15, Lebanon, Bozrah and Colchester for the tanker. responded, Due to the location this is a multi department response.

New London Ct, W/F 611 Ocean Ave. 09-19-2022

 New London Ct, W/F 611 Ocean Ave

New London FD received call for smoke coming from a window. First due found smoke from the OMD, and upgraded the assignment. Once the first crew made entry a working fire was declared. Crew found the main body of fire and had it under control in a few minutes. NFI

Lisbon Ct, 2nd alarm, 223 Newent Road. 08-22-22

Lisbon Fire Department along with Jewett City, Taftville and Yantic Fast responded to 223 Newent RD, for a reported house fire, Car -154 arrived to find a well involved 2 story house, with a walkout basement. A 2nd Alarm with extra tankers was requested. First due engine layed in from Rt-12, 1000ft plus away. Ladder 156 crew and first arriving firefighter stretched up the long driveway, A short time later and Eng-33 arrived from a different direction and could make 2nd angle on the 2nd driveway and was placed in front.  Crews from Several department worked the fire for about 30 mins to knock down the heavy fire. Crews worked the hot spots for while to bring it under control Additional companies requested, tankers were released fairly quick was Baltic, Plainfield, Preston City, Voluntown, Bozrah and the Mohegan Tribe. . The FMO is investigating the cause.

South Windham 2nd Alarm 08-20-22

 South Windham, 667 Windham Rd. 2nd Alarm

Around mid-night, Station WW Dispatched South Windham,Windham Center, North Windham and Engine 101 from Willimantic and Engine-33 Yantic Fast was dispatched to 667 Windham Rd. (Rt-32). For several reports of a building fire.2nd Alarm, First due officer reported heavy fire showing and requested a 2nd alarm, Which added Lebanon ladder 106, Et from Franklin, Scotland Engine and Colombia Engine. The former home, converted in storage for a Home and Garden supply store was loaded inside and out with supplies. Crews had difficulty gaining access into the rooms and rear of the building. This hampered efforts, at one point crew was notified of a possible occupant. No one was found.

Crew worked the fire for about 2 hrs before bringing it under control. Then stayed for a few more hrs to locate all the hot spots. The FMO is investigating the cause.

Norwich Ct, 51 14th Street. OMD 3rd Alarm +, 08-07-22

Around 05:10 Norwich fire dispatched, a reported wires on fire with the side of the building burning at 51 14th Street. Engine 2 reported a working fire w/exposure. During this time the fire was upgraded to a 2nd alarm due to extending into the upper floor of the OMD. As companies arrived, the fire ran the attic space, command requested a 3rd alarm. Crew worked the fire for about 2 hrs before it was under control. The Fire is under investigation.
