Putnam 2 working fires. 10-28-11

 Around 11:am Putnam Fire dispatched a fire in a commercial building off Kennedy drive and Canal St. While they were responding a 2nd fire was dispatched for the same street but different location. One was Woodstock Line the 2nd was Palleflex. The buildings were about 500' from each other. Putnam responded to Woodstock line with fire coming from a large fan on the B side of the building. East Putnam worked a minor fire in the Palleflex Building. M/A from Danielson and Woodstock's aided in the Woodstock line fire. Community and Pomfert also responded. Both fires are under investigation.

East Great Plain 2nd+ alarm 10-26-11

At 10pm EGPFD was dispatched to 340 West Thames St (Sure Fire Company) for smoke from the building. First due officer reported smoke showing and ordered a 2.5 line and forcible entry to the front of the building. The building is about 30x60 with the rear being  2 storys. Once the front  forced heavy smoke pushed out. A 2nd Alarm was requested. Lines were placed inservice in the basment storage area and the office floor area.  After a while the fire jumped to the cockloft area while crews were venting the roof. Condition deteriorated and all companies were removed from the building. At this time master streams were placed in service. After a short time crews re=entered the building for overhaul. The fire is under investgation by the NFO and the State FMO.

Oakdale Ct. W/F 10-23-11.

Oakdale fire along with Chesterfield and Montville's ladder, responded to the area of #300 Oxoboxo  Cross Rd for a house fire, Correct address is 291. First arriving found a heavily involved building and requested a tanker response. The fire was well advanced in the vacant home. The fire is under investigation

Bozrah RV Fire w/exposure 10-09-11

Bozrah fire was dispatched around 10:50 for a auto fire to the rear of Fitchville Auto. The arrived to find fire shooting above the building from the rear. The encountered a RV 50% involved with the building 12ft away and a Trailer full of tires starting to burn. Command request a working fire assignment, Yantic, Franklin and Mohegan Tribe for FAST. A 1.75 hand-line was placed in operations too control the fire with exposure lines stretched.  Minor extension in to the trailer, with some heat indication on the area of the Building.

On November 5, 2011 The Yantic Fire Engine Company #1 is hosting a one day firefighting tactics seminar. Two classes will beheld, the morning will be Firefighting Operations in Garden Apartments and Townhouses and the afternoon will be To Go or Not to Go: Fireground Decision Making. Both classes will be instructed by the Jersey Guys Firefighting Training.

East Great Plain MVA in the water. 09-26-11

EGPFD was dispatched for a person having seizures in the area of McDonald's on Rt-82, They found the car located in a small pond several hundred feet from the reported location. NFI at this time.

Bozrah MVA w/Fire 10-02-2011

Bozrah fire was dispatched to Rt-2 West bound for a reported MVA with fire south of exit 22, around 08:00.  They found a one car into the center median with the engine compartment on fire. The occupants exited the car, injuries unknown. During the incident heavy rain was falling the roads were very slippery.  

Franklin 2nd Alarm W/Tankers 09-29-11

 Franklin fire with Baltic and Lebanon were dispatched to 44 Ayer RD for a kitchen fire around 14:20, Then notified they were receiving several calls. Fire officer reported a working fire, FAST Team and tankers were added at this time. Fire was showing from several window and extending rapidly. Crews work on knocking down the heavy fire on the first floor, with M/A setting up a tanker relay. The house is a 2.5 story farm house, with a apartment off the back. Crews worked the fire as it was running the voids. Do to limited manpower FAST was put to work and a 2nd FAST was requested with additional manpower from several departments. The fire was contained in about 45 mins but crew worked hot spots for awhile. At this time no injuries have been reported, The FMO is investigating.

Boston Fire Boat, Visits Mystic Ct. 09-16-11

This afternoon the New Boston Fire Boat, stopped by Mystic Ct. on its way from Metalcraft Marine Inc. located in Kingston, Ontario to Its new home in Boston Harbor. The stop over was for lunch and to pick up the Boston Fire Commissioner,  Roderick Fraser. He is traveling the final distance with the Metalcraft crew and a few crew members from Marine 1. The Boat should arrive around 8pm tonight in Boston. Thanks goes to the Boston Fire Commissioner and the firefighters, Metalcraft Marine for being great host and allow us to tour your Boat and A/C Manfredi for the notification.

The City of Boston is purchasing a new state of the art fireboat with Chemical, Biological and Radiological emergency response capability for the Boston Fire Department. This new vessel will replace the current fireboat “FIREFIGHTER” which has been in service since 1972 and does not have the capabilities needed for a modern emergency response fireboat. “Purchasing a new fireboat will greatly enhance public safety in the City and in Boston Harbor and I commend Commissioner Fraser and his staff for their hard work on this issue,” stated Mayor Thomas M Menino.

          The new fireboat will be a high speed aluminum vessel with a maximum speed of 35 knots (approximately 40 MPH) and will be capable of pumping 12,000 gallons of water per minute. “The new fireboat will be more than twice as fast as FIREFIGHTER and will be able to pump twice as much water,” says Commissioner Roderick Fraser, “it will also have state of the art navigation systems as well as water jet propulsion and is designed to operate in a chemical or biological contaminated environment. This boat is light years ahead of the current fireboat and will greatly enhance our response capability anywhere in Boston Harbor.”

            The new fireboat will be 69 feet long, and will be built by Metalcraft Marine, Inc. of Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Metalcraft Marine specializes in designing and building high speed custom aluminum work boats. It has recently built fireboats for Seattle WA, Tampa, FL, Miami, FL, Jacksonville, FL and the State of Rhode Island. The City received two grants from the Department of Homeland Security for $2 million towards the construction of this vessel with the remaining $2.2 million funded by the city through the Fire Department’s capital plan.

            The vessel will be named “John S. Damrell” after the former Chief Engineer of the Boston Fire Department who battled Boston’s Great Fire of 1872 and who later became Boston’s first Inspector of Buildings during the 1880’s. Damrell was instrumental in bringing great improvements to the fire service as well as being instrumental in creating modern building codes at the national level. The City expects to take delivery of this vessel in August of 2011. (September)

City of Groton, 09-16-11

 City of Groton, fire department responded to 235 Lestertown RD for a barn fire.

Minor damage to the building, Fire is investigation. NFI

Taftville W/F+ 09-15-11

 Taftville Fire Responded to 114 Providence St. for a reported fire on the porch. Car 2 found fire consuming the porch and entering one apartment. One occupant escaped after hearing yelling outside. Fire due engine arrived a knocked down the main body of fire on the outside. As the truck and M/A arrived other lines were placed in service and searches were conducted and Tower 25 vented the roof. The fire was under control in a short time. More photos to follow.

Willimantic 2nd Alarm 09-14-11

Willimantic Fire responded to 25 Vermont Dr for a reported apartment fire with Numerous calls for a working house fire. Station K "striking the box" adding UConn for RIT. Car 101 and Eng 101 arrived to fine working fire in a 40 x 60 2 stry wd, heavy fire 1st floor .  Car 101 requested a 2nd Alarm. The first floor apartment sustained heavy damage, The fire is under investigation by the FMO. 

Mansfield 2nd Alarm 08-03-11

Mansfield Fire along with Ashford for an Engine, UConn, and Willimantic Engine 301 for RIT. They responded to  556 Wormwood Hill RD., for a garage fire. Some of the roads had trees still down from the recent storm. Crews encountered heavy fire conditions upon arrival. NFI. The fire is under investigation.

Willimantic W/F 08-29-11

 Willimantic fire responded to Willimantic Wast for a fire in the shipping docks area, crews worked the area for several hours with master streams and overhauled the pile until the fire was extinguished.
